With data deduplication, only one instance of the attachment is actually stored; each subsequent instance is just referenced back to the one saved copy. In this example, a 100 MB storage demand could be reduced to only 1 MB.

Dewpoint offers Data Deduplication from several different companies allowing Dewpoint to create a solution that matches your individual needs and requirements.  Slutions are available for Backup and Recovery, Server Virtualization, Disaster Recovery, Remote office support and others.  We offer both hardware solutions, such as Virtual Tape Libraries and Disk to Disk, as well as software based solutions from Symantec and CommVault.

Data deduplication is also finding its way into primary storage. Some of the largest savings have been realized through Server Virtualization, with storage savings greater than 70%.  

One of the first vendors to offer primary storage deduplication was NetApp. It is included on all of NetApp storage appliances, with no additional charge or licensing fee. Implementing this in your datacenter can expect to reduce your storage requirements by 50% or more. 

Sun Microsystems has also introduced data deduplication in its Unified Storage platform, which will be included, free of charge, with all of the 7000 Unified Storage appliances.
