What is Cloud Computing?

“Cloud Computing” is a sustainable, long-term IT paradigm and the successor to previous mainframe, client/server and network computing eras. Cloud infrastructures have the potential for economic and functional benefits that will drive the transformation from traditional software and hardware into IT subscription services and pay-per-use models.

An enterprise might subscribe to a public cloud or a private cloud. They might move applications to the cloud or build their own cloud. Whatever the strategy, tailored service level agreements, single or multi-tenancy, scalability and security are tailored to meet the needs of the organization.

What drives Cloud adoption?

Private Cloud

If an enterprise needs to be the only subscriber based on security or regulation requirements, a private cloud would meet their needs. Then the decision is where the private cloud is to be located, internal or at a cloud-provider? At the cloud-provider will give the most flexibility concerning scalability up and down the environment. The enterprise would let the cloud provider provide the entire infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and the enterprise would focus on the applications.

Public Cloud

On the other hand, the enterprise may decide to move to a public cloud where the cloud is shared with other subscribers. Like the private cloud, the public would give the enterprise the flexibility to ramp up very quickly and scale back just as easily when demand is low. The cloud provider manages all infrastructure and equipment while the enterprise would pay only for the resources required. The cloud is shared with other subscribers but the applications, web services and data of an enterprise are isolated and secure.

There are many types of clouds such as storage clouds, database clouds, testing clouds and platform clouds. There is also the option for hybrid clouds that offer a mix of external and internal (i.e., private) clouds with the capability to move between the two.
